🌍 General Travel Tips for East Africa Safaris

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date and has two blank pages. Most travellers require an eVisa for Kenya or Tanzania, which should be applied for online before arrival.

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and evacuation is strongly recommended for all safari travellers.

Safari vehicles have limited space. Pack in soft-sided luggage and keep weight within airline limits for domestic flights. Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, olive) is best for game drives.

Consult your doctor or travel clinic well in advance. Common recommendations may include yellow fever (depending on travel route), malaria prophylaxis, and routine vaccinations.

East Africa can be warm, especially during game drives. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.

Always follow your guide’s instructions, keep a safe distance from animals, and never feed or disturb wildlife. Responsible behaviour helps protect animals and their habitats.

Major cities accept credit cards, but cash (USD or local currency) is useful for tips, souvenirs, and small purchases. ATMs are available in towns and cities.

Tipping is customary but optional. As a general guide:

Safari driver-guide: USD 10–20 per person per day

Lodge staff: USD 5–10 per day (often pooled)

Power outlets are UK-style (Type G) in Kenya and Tanzania. Internet and mobile coverage are good in towns and lodges, though limited in remote safari areas.

Dress modestly in towns and villages, ask permission before taking photos of people, and respect local customs. A friendly greeting goes a long way.

Safaris are very safe, but common travel sense applies. Keep valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items, and follow local advice when in cities.

Safari travel moves at a slower pace. Be flexible, enjoy nature, and trust your guide—some of the best moments happen when you least expect them.
